Twilight’s Fancy
Once upon a time, a friend of mine handed me a frayed clutch cable and said, “I bet you can’t make jewelry out of that.”
Oh really?
That was the first necklace I made with dangles. I’d made all sorts of regular beaded necklaces, but never one with luxurious, fantastical drops. And I was not gonna lose that bet.
Little did I know, that necklace would not only stay with me, it’d serve as inspiration for another one–sans car parts.
Once upon a time, I was a seat filler at some pretty big awards shows. People’s Choice Awards, SAG Awards, American Music Awards, the Grammys…to name a few. I didn’t have the money to buy gowns and jewelry, but I wanted to stand out. My designs have always been unique. I made my clothes and my jewelry. I even got compliments from people I don’t even know.
The latest comes from Jonathan Knight of the New Kids on the Block when I met him in April 2009. He said, “Whoa, that’s a whole catsuit. That’s awesome.” I replied, “Wow. Thanks. I made it myself.” He replied, “That’s awesome. Wow. That’s fuckin’ awesome.” And somehow I didn’t swoon right then and there. I still don’t know how I managed to hold myself up. I don’t think he realized how his enthusiastic words would be added to my inspirations for doing my handcrafted necklaces and purses and wine charms and a few other things real soon, too.
For years, my friends have been telling me I should sell my work. For some reason, I finally started believing them.
